“I got a heads up from someone about the program, so I knew I’d have to put some time into the project and act as the General Contractor.  You don’t actually have to pound the nails, but I did.  It’s really just a big puzzle you put together.  If you’re good at scheduling and gently pressuring your subcontractors when needed, anyone can build a house.  If you don’t get intimidated by the process, it’s pretty easy,” says Steve.  “I think it’s a great program. We have a quality house.”

“All the materials were good quality.  We didn’t have to shim even one wall corner by so much as 1/8”.  Everything butted up and stood straight,” says Steve.  Susan adds, “The timelines they gave us for delivery and pickup of the materials were always exact.”

“I never felt like we were left out in the cold.  The folks at Homestead always had the answer or got the answer for our questions.  It seemed like they had as much vested interest in our home as we did,” says Steve. 

“We initially invested about $700.  Even the cost of the land was included in the loan.”  Susan adds, “Having the land included in the loan saved on closing costs because we only had one closing at the bank rather than two. And now we have about $85,000 in equity.”

“We have a gorgeous home.  I love the layout of our home and the fact that we were able to plan our own variations to the design, even while we were building,” says Susan.  “I did okay – we did okay,” claims Steve.
