“It was a lot of hard work, but also a lot of fun. We have something now that we’re both very proud of,” says Eric. “Being your own general contractor is the scariest part, but it’s also the most rewarding. You look back and realize wow, I did that! We have such wonderful stories to tell now. The satisfaction is great and the memories are great. Our advice is don’t be afraid. Ask a lot of questions and go to open houses to see what other people have done. We had a great experience with Homestead.”
“We already had our basement done and had been living there for about 11 years when we decided to build the main floor. We looked at different plans for over a year – modular, stick built, building ourselves – before we found Homestead Homes on the Internet. They had a plan that fit our basement dimensions almost perfect and it had everything we wanted . . . a Jacuzzi in the master bathroom, three bedrooms with a separate bath for our kids, and an open kitchen.”
“We knew we were going to do something no matter what, and Homestead was really the only option where we could do a lot of the work ourselves, save a lot of money and get it done in a timely manner. But we were still skeptical at first, not knowing if we could build our own home. Attending a seminar and a couple open houses helped quite a bit,” says Eric. Rose adds, “The builders workshop was really nice because we got to talk to other people who were going through the same things we were, and also because we got to pick out the materials we wanted to use in our new home.”
“We had a local contractor who did the outside work and he made several comments about how the materials were good, the workmanship was good and the walls were all square. The walls being pre-built saved time and allowed us to get the contractor we wanted. He probably wouldn’t have had time to do our house if he’d had to build the walls himself. Everything just fell together. It was also nice to have all the materials right on site so you weren’t constantly running to the lumberyard or hardware store to pick up what you need.”
“We could not have asked for a better working relationship than we have with Homestead Homes. We probably wouldn’t have been able to build this nice of a house if we hadn’t done it this way. We didn’t put any money down and we now have over $90,000 in equity. You can’t beat that!” |
