Why a finished basement is worth the investment
When building a homestead it’s important to check off everything on your list. If you’re on a smaller plot and want an additional space for the children or visitors, a finished basement will be worth the investment!
Why you should finish it
A finished basement can turn into a teen’s hangout spot, a place for visitors, a game room, a man cave, or spare bedrooms. The space can be turned into any functional space that suits your family's future needs. It sounds like an enormous amount of work, but if you’re already building a homestead, why not give yourself another bonus space!
Get rid of the toys: One of the best reasons for finishing the basement is getting rid of the clutter on the main floor. Let the kids take over the basement with their toys and games. This will help keep them in one location and let you keep the main living area free from stepping on another LEGO or Barbie brush!
It’s energy efficient! When building a homestead with our team, all of our homes are guaranteed to be energy efficient which includes the basement! A basement that is properly insulated will help regulate the temperature in your lower level.
In-laws or friends in town? Having an extra bedroom or space for in-laws, friends and family members is essential. This gives everyone their own space to relax and you don’t need to share living spaces. When everyone is ready for quiet time, the in-laws can go down into the basement and you can stay in the living room to watch another episode of your favorite show. Sounds magical!
Let’s your family grow. If you build a smaller home with a finished basement, it will give your family the opportunity to stay in your home as your family grows! You can make the basement your new master bedroom, move your teen to the basement or create any other extra space you desire.
A finished basement will always add value to your home. There are different types of basements depending on what type of lot you have.
Walkout basement: When there is an extreme slope to your lot, this is the type of basement to go for. It allows for windows, sliding glass doors, plenty of natural light and the ability to walk out onto the yard or patio. The Mathew family is currently building a homestead with our help! They decided on a custom home with a walk-out basement that leads to their backyard.
Standard lot basement: This is what people think of traditional basement.
Garden-level basement: A garden level basement is partly above the grade, due to a sloping lot. This allows for windows without the window well, but no doors.
If your plan is to sell your home in the future, a finished basement could be worth the investment. A report in 2017 states that if homeowners use basic materials and opt out to add any luxury to the space, they can expect up to 70 percent of their investment back at resale!
Can you image if one finished their basement and used Homestead Homes materials? The resale value or equity of your home could change dramatically once you finish the home.
At the end of the day, it’s worth the investment to finish your basement whether it’s for personal reasons, resale value or home equity!
